The Lost Halloween II Trailer: Mike's in White Satin

Rob Zombie's 2007 Halloween reimagining did little to impress critics, who seemed disappointed that the director had chosen to abandon the steady-handed terror orchestrated by John Carpenter in favor of a messier take that sought to shed some light on Michael Myers's childhood and psychological motivations. Still, some got it -- the Village Voice's Nathan Lee called it "a biopic, and a superb one at that... Zombie's portrait is every bit as reverent, scrupulous, and deeply felt as any Oscar grubbing horrorshow." Despite expressing reluctance to return to the material, Zombie's sequel arrives in theaters next week.

By some twist of fate, a second, unused trailer has "leaked" to the web just in time for Halloween II's release. And while the first was effective enough, this new one, dare we say, is kind of a treat. From Brad Dourif's Sheriff Brackitt getting the dreaded "the 9-1-1 call came from your own home" news to Malcolm McDowell's Dr. Samuel Loomis spelling the word "dead," to Margot Kidder as Laurie's post-traumatic stress counselor, to a terrifying extended sequence set to the Moody Blues's "Nights in White Satin," it's becoming abundantly clear that this is not your garden-variety Halloween retread. And that's not all! You get glass coffins! Family secrets! New Romantic outfits!

Verdict: Glad we don't have to wait until Halloween.

I was kind of rooting for this movie (I'm always rooting for things) but it's like they're dumping it.
I don't watch a lot of TV, but I feel like I should have been seeing commercials for this for weeks now.

  • FrancoisTrueFaux says:

Wow, this trailer makes me kinda wanna see the movie. . .and practice my Malcolm McDowell impression.

I don't have cable, so I can't gauge really, but wouldn't most (all?) commercials for something like this have to be shown later in the evening? Am I pulling that out of my bum?
I'm actually kind of excited for this movie. I didn't LOVE the first one, but I thought it was pretty solid. I think the Nathan Lee quote is fairly accurate, but to me that only describes the first portion of the film. What I didn't like about the film was that after taking a tour of Michael's childhood, it seemed to rush through the motions of Carpenter's story. I would have rather had a longer movie to do Carpenter's story justice, or just the origin story.

  • Seth Abramovitch says:

Zombie actually agrees with you about that. We have an interview with him running next week where he addresses that, and said he only returned to the material to be able to fully flesh out what he had wanted to accomplish in the first.

  • Colander says:

Yeah, I'm thinking this'll be the Devil's Rejects of Halloween movies.
If I have an extra couple dollars, I'll see it.

  • np says:

Ooooh. Can't wait to read the interview! And now I'm really excited to see H2.

  • Inigo Montoya says:

You don't even need to see it now. That trailer is basically the entire movie, sans the kills.
Actually, you should see it anyway - if only for Weird Al's brilliant cameo.
