Did Gerard Butler Ever Confirm His Bisexuality to Movieline?

gerardbutlerbisexual.jpg

The gay blogosphere is abuzz with this provocative quote from an alleged Gerard Butler interview from 2004:

"I talk about my sexuality," he says, "But it's always glossed over. People seem to shy away from the issue. Whenever it is discussed, its distended and exaggerated. Gerard Butler is gay. No I'm not. I don't know myself what I am so it can be bewildering to see that being plugged. I have been in relationships with women. And men. That doesn't make me gay. That doesn't make me straight. Its hard enough to go through these things in my mind without being scrutinised about it so there are times when you want to close the door and say my sexuality is my own personal business."

Tangy stuff! Where did this bombshell interview come from? Hmm, let's see here... "Movieline." Hey, that's us! So is this thing the real deal, or the product of someone's overactive imagination?

Sorry kids, but this one's a fake -- Butler's rep Joy Fehily confirms it, and so can we.

Archive.org traces the article's origin to an NYCWave.com message board where author "Marianne Tydings" posted it in August 2004. (Try Googling the woman's name -- you'll have no luck.) In the post's supposed excerpt from Movieline, Butler is anticipating the release of Phantom of the Opera that year, but a look back through our archives reveals no interview with Butler during that time period. Movieline did talk to Butler about the sequel to Tomb Raider for our July/August 2003 issue, but it's a completely different interview and there are no salacious quotes about his sexuality.

Also, Movieline's an American magazine, and we'd never spell the word "scrutinised" without a Z. Who would? How about a British tabloid, or an internet poster whose attempt to whip up an imaginary interview left one easily-discovered grammatical tell?

Let us hope that you are joking, Gwen. It would seem gay or straight or bohemian, he belongs to himself. Also, you need to back away from overuse of exclamation points.

  • Alexander says:

Who the f*ck cares, anyway...it's not like any of us mere mortals are going to get him in bed anyway...

  • Joan says:

Oh dear ! how Tacky. Let's leave it there. We all love him and wish him all the best in his very gifted acting career. He doesn't read the tabloids so I hardly think he would be bothered by this rubbish.

I think this interview was actually with Tom Hardy (Handsome Bob in RocknRolla). I saw it on uTube.

  • canuck69 says:

Odd that such a denial would be published. Odder yet that Movieline has apparently had to "research" whether it was genuine. Obviously, Gerard Butler threatened them with a lawsuit and so they...prevaricated. Such a shame that Gerard isn't comfortable in his own skin. As for his sexuality, just ask people in Scotland or London. He was well known.

  • wannabe says:

One sad thing about fan sites and fan comment boards is that invariably women pop up (occasionally men), "defending" the honor of the star in question and denying he is gay or bisexual. The fact that they are driven by lust--and by the hopeless dream that they could one day score with the star in question--is only too obvious. It is so, so sad to read their posts. Oddly, it is only the less established stars (Gerard Butler, Jamie Bamber etc) who attract these fans and fan sites. Guess real stars don't need them.

  • Amy says:

Well His sexuality is his own, whatever makes him happy is his business. Does any of that change the way I look at him? No. Does it change his acting? No. Gerard is a very talented man, can pull off and tackle any role thrown at him, weather it be him playing Dracula, the phantom of the opera, an angry father or a bounty hunter. He always strikes my attention. Actors are human beings just like us all.

  • TheLordJesusChrist says:

Haha, gwen seems insecure. She knows that if Gerry was bi, she'd lose to a guy!

Hey gwen, he wouldn't want you anyway. looool

  • Donna says:

I think he is a great actor and seems to be a decent human being. I don't care what his private life is like, because his character is what is most important. That being said, I saw him on an interview with Craig Ferguson and they leaned in to talk, I guess thinking their mics weren't on yet, cause the audience was clapping. Ferguson said, "Hey, how's your partner?" Gerrard quickly glanced at him and said something like fine or great and changed the subject. Whether Ferguson was giving him grief or being generally friendly, I don't know. Again, it's his business, isn't it?

You would know that you are already addicted to pornography if you use depend highly on it for happiness and sexual pleasure.
However, you can choose something that is much more convenient for
you. There are actually many sexual deviants on the internet, especially in large social networking sites
and the usual targets are minors.

  • F**kmehard says:

    Hi Gerard
i would Love to have you COME all over me ....... are you single ?

    ?

  • I agree that his sexuality is his own business.
However, as a huge fan of Gerard Butler, I will give my fucking opinion on the matter:..Regardless of his past, or his current sexuality, the man is walking, talking sex-on-a-stick. He is a great actor and has proven it time and time again. GERARD: YOUR TRUE FANS LOVE YOU NO MATTER WHAT <3
The fact that he appeals to 'gay' 'bi' 'straight' and even 'experimenting' men and women around the world just proves just how damn sexy he really is.
Who hates someone so much to take enough time out of their day to comment on an actor/actress's sexuality? Exactly, they are just jealous.
