Nickelodeon's 'Splat' Logo is Dead, and You are Old

If it's true that network logos die in threes, somebody had better send a night nurse over to check on MTV, as Nickelodeon has just joined Sci-Fi in the rebranding roller derby. The kid channel's iconic splat logo (which began in 1984 and survived for twenty-five years) has perished.

In its place comes a utilitarian, lowercase design that Nickelodeon is hoping to make standard through its sister channels: Nick at Nite, Nicktoons, The N (which will be renamed TeenNick) and Noggin (newly rechristened Nick Jr).

"In asking ourselves if everything could live under the splat, we decided that the splat was dated," explained Cyma Zarghami, president of Nick and MTV Networks' Kids and Family Group. "It just couldn't be done in a streamlined way."

Will the new, coldly efficient Nickelodeon still make room for the occasional green sliming evoked by its old logo? Perhaps fittingly, the answer is "I don't know."

Wow these companies take huge risks with their brand identity. This is a bold move by the Nick especially because their audience are toddlers to tweens who have very short attention spans. They know that splat logo anywhere. They can spot it a mile away. I think Nick should have kept that splat and incorporate the new font into it. But that's just me. I don't believe in total brand revamping for certain brands. Hopefully MTV doesn't go down this road so dramatically. Can you imagine Apple filling in the bite, or Disney changing fonts to Calibri or something? That would be a major fail. Well much luck to them. My kids will probably ask if mommy and I canceled the Nickelodeon channel

The new logo sucks as well. It must be that unpleasant orange hue that I just can't forgive. If Nickelodeon has such a hard-on for slime, why didn't they just make the letters green?

People named "Cyma Zarghami" are in charge of network branding? No wonder we're stuck with Syfy.
What the hell is going on?
    I don't know... (looks up.)

It's so...unfamiliar. The nick splat is better IMO.

i really do NOT like the new logo, its screams grow up kids and dont have fun. the old fashion splat is what i grew up on and i think that they should change it back.

  • JKL says:

I HATE the new logo. I know why they changed it though. When Nick was a splat, shows for people of all ages were on but know most shows are stupid cgi and all shows are about little bratty teenage girls crying because they don't become famous! Why not put all the teen shows on TeeNick and bring some of the old shows back. Could you imagine if Disney Channel became an outline of a microphone, Cartoon Network was CN in black writing?!!!!!!!!!!

I started a petition to bring back the old Nickelodeon logo. Zarghami was such an asshole in ruining the network. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/167/277/976/operation-splat-bring-back-the-old-nickelodeon-logo/
