Aggrieved Brüno Terrorists Announce Revenge Plot Against Sacha Baron Cohen

If you thought that Irish theater-manager outrage would be the biggest international incident spurred by Brüno, let's really hope you're right. Because the alternative seems kind of awful: a revenge attack against Sacha Baron Cohen and his fellow terrorist-tweakers, as pledged Monday by the militia made famous in one of the film's most incendiary scenes.

While one can never totally count out Baron Cohen's elaborate prankdom when it comes to ticket-spiking news like this, threats by known terrorists -- like those of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, the armed wing of the Fatah movement -- are the kinds of notoriety that neither a conspicuous celebrity nor his studio backers probably sought or want. According to reports, the militants have issued an edict expressing anger at Brüno's interview with former member Ayman Abu Aita -- most likely the part where the gay Austrian pseudostar (and/or the Jewish Brit who plays him) likens Osama bin Laden to a "dirty wizard or a homeless Santa":

"We reserve the right to respond in the way we find suitable against this man. The movie was part of a conspiracy against the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade. [...] According to what we checked, there was no meeting about the real context of the film. This was a dirty use of our brother Ayman. And we don't accept that the name of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade is part of the film."

Oh, brother. Make another snip, I suppose, and don't worry about Baron Cohen. If the security detail that got him the meeting in the first place is as good as he told David Letterman they are, he should be plenty safe living underground for the next 10 years or so.
