The trailer for celebrated Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki's tenth film, Ponyo (originally called Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea), has gone live on Disney's website, where the director's surreal, ecological artistry -- this time telling the damp tale of a young mermaid who longs to become a human girl -- is on lush display.
Miyazaki's cult status and critical acclaim now earn him first choice among Hollywood talent for the Disney-produced English translations, meaning the likes of Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, and Matt Damon can be heard speaking the lines of his various seamen and goddesses. (Perhaps only in his topsy-turvy world, however, would Damon earn billing far behind a Bonus Jonas and Miley Cyrus's kid sister, both of whom were the beneficiaries of the Disney Channel Friends & Family Casting Plan.) Beyond them, Betty White, Cloris Leachman, Lily Tomlin, and -- if you can manage to shake off any tartly citric 30 Rock associations -- even Tina Fey will also help transport you to this imaginary world, though you may find yourself surprised at just who voices whom.
