Where do you even begin with the first trailer for Bad Lieutenant, Werner Herzog and Nicolas Cage's re-envisioning of Abel Ferrara's 1992 cult classic? Only unearthed on Wednesday despite having been on YouTube for several weeks now, the NSFW spot hums along fairly blandly until right around the one-minute mark, at which point everything goes nuts and you can start making your real judgments as to whether, as Ferrara insisted, these people should "die in Hell." It kind of looks like they already have. The video is after the jump.
Actually, let's be precise: The working title cited here is Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, transplanting Ferrara's original to the tax-credit-ready streets of Crescent City. Cage appears as a local whose gun-brandishing, old-lady-threatening, pill-popping, iguana-interrogating, crack-smoking ("You don't have a lucky crack pipe?") tendencies get him in trouble with the police force -- among other parties. I'd rather not spoil any more of the experience for you, apart from welcoming Cage back from the mainstream dead and praising Val Kilmer's dramatic way with binoculars. Werner, you've done it again -- I'm speechless.
VERDICT: Already in line at the theater.
