The Tony Awards are a very important awards ceremony that all of America should pay attention to, even though the things being rewarded are shows that (by definition) can only be seen in one small area of Manhattan. But still, important! So what did we learn from today's Tony nominations?
First, that Broadway musicals are as movie-happy as ever. The biggest honoree was Billy Elliot, The Musical, which nabbed fifteen nominations (other movie-to-stage honorees included 9 to 5: The Musical and the musical we refuse to name, you can't make us).
However, there were some notable exceptions to Broadway's Hollywood hard-on, and they came in the non-musical categories: Jeremy Piven (who famously bailed out of Speed-the-Plow by blaming mercury poisoning and is totally pissed that they didn't have something semi-plausible like swine flu earlier) was snubbed by Tony, as was Equus's Nude Daniel Radcliffe. Truly, it is a shame that they couldn't meet the high bar of quality set by American Idol reject Constantine Maroulis, who was nominated today for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. Important!
