HuffPo Celebrates Earth Day With Unmarked Advertorial By...Uh, 'Shrek'?

Happy Earth Day, everyone! Actually, to be totally honest, I kind of forgot about it until twenty minutes ago, when I had the misfortune of stumbling upon a Huffington Post editorial written by Shrek. Wait, what? Yes. Come enjoy the dumb things this fictional character had to say about a real holiday, all the while touting his Broadway show in kind of an ethically iffy way!

Here is what "Shrek" would like you to know right off the bat, so that you don't fret that his "editorial writing" is taking time away from his main vocation (compiling dated pop culture references for larf-filled Shrek sequels):

As it happens, I'm not in the swamp at the moment. I'm in New York City, "treading the boards," with my friends Donkey, Princess Fiona and all the fractured fairy tale creatures in my new Broadway musical.

Yes, OK. Once. I saw a clip from this "musical" on The View, and it was so bad that even the actors appeared to be looking away from each other in embarassment. But, y'know, why not try to slip in some not-so-subtle advertisement for the struggling production (including the toootally natural decision to feature Broadway Shrek in the author picture instead of the more familiar version that keeps Mike Myers in residuals). Might have been nice to tag this as an advertorial, but who cares! Editorial guidelines emit hazardous levels of carbon dioxide!

But our pundit continues:

Every week, in five evening performances and three matinees, I go on an epic quest and (spoiler alert!) save Princess Fiona. I wish it could be that easy to clean up our planet and protect our environment.

Shut up. Shut up, idiot.

And then, here is the succinct author bio:

The author is an Oscar-winning ogre who currently stars on Broadway in Shrek The Musical.

You don't say.

How cute of HuffPo - and no wonder I never read it.

  • Inhaler says:

Donkey also got into the spirit by wishing a "Happy Earf Day," to one and all.

  • Little Mintz Sunshine says:

"I’m in New York City, “treading the boards,” with my friends Donkey, Princess Fiona..."
And thus, Fiona finds out Shrek has dumped her...

Okay, I only saw some of the first Shrek movie. So - what is the insane appeal of this charachter? He looks funny and spews pop culture reference that 90% of 6-year olds can understand? But because he makes said reference, parent's think that they're being fed some hip, adult entertainment?
